Dear Friend of the Movement: The summer of 1963 was a defining moment in the history of African-Americans in Americus, Georgia and Sumter County. There were many mass meetings, marches, voter registration drives, and boycotts. Hundreds of individuals felt the need to participate in this movement, and, as a result, the Americus-Sumter County Movement-Remembered Committee and others are planning a weekend that will pay tribute to all. Labor Day Weekend, August, 31 through September 2, 2007, will be filled with
activities that we want you to take part in. There will be an old-fashioned mass
meeting, a ball, oral histories of jailed protestors, and an exhibit of civil
rights memorabilia that will include photos, artifacts, newspaper articles, and
SNCC field reports. Our goals are to make this commemoration an annual event and we want you to help us on Super Saturday, September 1, 2007 by performing at the Americus Sumter Exposition Center (the Sumter County Fairground) on Highway 30, Americus. The time of the performance will be announced later. We will showcase talent on Saturday. If anyone is interested in performing, contact Mr. Kevin Pless at 229-924-8128 or via email at kpless@amerigospel.com Thank you for your support.
